Long COVID: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Options

Feeling like COVID just won’t quit? You’re not alone. Millions struggle with Long COVID, a condition with lingering effects long after the initial infection. This post dives deep into the causes, symptoms, and most importantly, offers hope with potential treatment options.

What is Long COVID?

Long COVID, also known as post-COVID conditions, refers to a variety of new or ongoing health problems that people experience weeks, months, or even years after a COVID-19 infection. These issues can significantly impact a person’s daily life.

What causes Long COVID?

The exact cause of Long COVID remains unknown, but research suggests it’s linked to:

  • Dysregulation of the immune system: After fighting off the initial infection, the immune system may stay overactive, leading to chronic inflammation throughout the body.
  • Spike protein toxicity: The spike protein, a part of the virus (and vaccine) that allows it to enter cells, could remain in the body and cause damage.

When I see patients with Long COVID, I always ask for a history surrounding events. Did they have other stressors in their body prior to getting ill or receiving the vaccine? Mental stress, physical stress, toxins, infections, inflammation, autoimmune disease, cancer and more, can all play a role in weakening the immune system and allowing for these type of Long COVID symptoms to arise.

Symptoms of Long COVID

Long COVID can affect many parts of the body, with symptoms varying person to person. Some common ones include:

  • Neurology & Brain: Headaches, brain fog, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), paresthesia (tingling/numbness), Bell’s Palsy (facial paralysis), muscle weakness
  • Lungs: Shortness of breath at rest or when active, oxygen starvation, cough, upper respiratory symptoms that just won’t go away
  • Heart: High blood pressure, Myocarditis (inflammation of the heart), irregular heartbeat
  • Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, constipation, gas/bloating
  • Others: Poor sleep, extreme fatigue, depression

Treatment Options for Long COVID

While there’s no cure yet for Long COVID, some treatment options can help manage symptoms and improve overall health. These are all services we do at The Health Spa by Vive IV Therapy in Peosta and Cedar Rapids

  1. Ozone Therapy: Ozone helps stimulate and regenerate mitochondria, the cell’s energy powerhouse, crucial for healing damaged tissues. This can be done via blood, or other routes. We have an ozone sauna that can help detox the body as well.
  2. IV Therapies: Certain intravenous (IV) drips, including NAD+, Methylene Blue, and high-dose vitamin C, CBD Infusions and medications as indicated, can improve mitochondrial function.
  3. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT): Patients breathe pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, saturating the body’s fluids with oxygen, vital for healing oxygen-starved tissues.
  4. Stem Cell / Exosome Therapy: While heavily regulated, stem cells hold immense potential for regenerating damaged tissues.
  5. Red Light + Infrared Therapy: This non-invasive therapy uses a combination of red and infrared light wavelengths to improve mitochondrial and cellular function in Long COVID patients. It helps reduce inflammation and promote deep tissue repair.
